Praying The Warrior's Prayer

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not aginst flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil.

The Shield Of Faith

A. Overcoming by Faith

“This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” (1 John 5:4b)  “I will say of the lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my god, in whom I trust (put faith in).’ You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent (Satan).” (Psalm 91:2,13) “I (Jesus) have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions (evil spirits) and to overcome all the power of the enemy (Satan).” (Luke 10:19)

B. God is Our Shield

“After this, the Word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram.  I am your SHIELD.”  (Gen. 15:1)  “He (God) has given us new birth…into an inheritance that can never perish…kept in heaven for you, who through FAITH are SHIELDED by god’s power.” (1 Peter 1:3b-5a)  Our faith is not the shield.  God is the shield.  Our faith allows Him to shield us as we trust Him.

C. The Protective Shield

“I (God) will protect him (the one who trusts in Him), for he acknowledges my name.” (Psalm 91:14b)  “Take up the SHIELD OF FAITH, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (Eph. 6:16)  “Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence (terminal illness).  His faithfulness will be your SHIELD and rampart.  You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day (spiritual attack), nor the pestilence (sickness) that that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague (disease) that destroys at midday.  A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.” (Psalm 91:3-7)

The Breastplate Of Righteousness

There are two kinds of righteousness: our own, and God’s.  “…I have lost all things.  I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a RIGHTEOUSNESS of my own, that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – The RIGHTEOUSNESS that comes from God and is by faith.” (Philippians 3:8b-9)

A.  We are called to RIGHTEOUS living. (practical righteousness)

1. By resisting sinful desires

“Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.  Do not offer the parts of your body to sin…but rather offer yourselves to God…and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.” (Romans 6:12-13)

2. Through obedience

“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey – whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to RIGHTEOUSNESS.” (Romans 6:16)

B.  We are RIGHTEOUS through Christ.  (positional righteousness)

“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.  But, if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the father in our defense – Jesus Christ, the RIGHTEOUS one. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 2:1-2a)  “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)  “But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of RIGHTEOUSNESS.” (Romans 8:10)  “it is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us…our RIGHTEOUSNESS, holiness, and redemption.” (1 Cor. 1:30)  “God made him who had no sin (Jesus) to be sin for us, that we might become the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God.” (2 Cor. 5:21)
